Construction starts on Bucharest Airport rail link

ROMANIA: Minister of Transport Sorin Buse and representatives of the state-owned rail infrastructure manager CFR SA and rail passenger operator CFR Calatori have presented the future rail link project between Bucharest International Airport Henri Coanda (Otopeni) and Gara de Nord station, worth EUR 89 million.

The project will include the rehabilitation and electrification works of the 17km Gara de Nord – Odăile stretch and a construction of a new 2.3km rail segment from Odăile to the airport, as well as a new airport railway station.


The project will be delivered in two stages, the Phase 1 will see the construction of the airport rail line, as well as the temporary rail station, close to the airport’s arrivals terminal. The Phase 1 will take 18 months to implement starting in October 2016 and is expected to be completed by April 2018. The cost of the realisation of this segment is EUR 88.8 million and will be covered with European funds and from the State budget.

Phase 2 involves building a multimodal underground subway terminal, with the completion date planned for 2020.
